Dad Talk

Have you had enough opportunities to talk with your kids about sex yet – News of sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, inappropriate advances in the work place, etc… has blast into our homes through various media outlets. The veil has been pulled back on Hollywood. In government, it seems character was not effectively vetted before several congressmen were elected or addressed while they were in office.

Just when you thought all standards for sexuality and healthy relationships had been discarded in our culture, there is a glimpse of concern for the status quo. This is great news for us dads because it gives us a very real-time opportunity to discuss God’s design with our kids and what happens when man deviates from that design. Male and female, He created us. Attraction to each other and human sexuality are part of His design. They are also points of vulnerability in the flesh.

But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, … For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person – such a person is an idolater – has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and of God. – Ephesians 5:3&5. No platitudes here – Paul addressed the issues of the day head on. In Corinth, he set the standard for the Church – We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2Corinthians 10:5. It is a natural attraction in the flesh that is to be acknowledged. Discipline in the flesh through a relationship with Jesus the Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit tunes man into God’s design for sexuality and marriage. When tuned-in to Christ it is very clear what is to be tuned-out.

Here are some Biblical references for you to help your family get tuned-in to God’s design:

  • Sexuality: “…male and female, He created them.” – Genesis 1:27-28;
  • Attraction: “…bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; … ‘woman,’” Genesis 2:23;
  • Marriage: “…man … is united to his wife, they become one flesh.” – Genesis 2:24;
  • Responsibility: “… love, … respect” – Ephesians 5:25-33;
  • Discipline: “…not even a hint of sexual immorality,” – Ephesians 5:3;
  • Family: “…what does God seek? Godly offspring.” – Malachi 2:15

Prayer guide: Lord, thank You for Your design of human sexuality that brings man and woman together in a beautiful union. Through that union, as husband and wife we are to be fruitful and multiply, and as dad and mom You give us an opportunity to raise Godly offspring. Too often I get caught up in the hyper-sexualized culture that contradicts Your design. Forgive me. Given the context of Your Word, sexual immorality has been around a long time. Grant me discernment to know what needs to be tuned-out and strength to keep my family tuned-in to Your design for sexuality and healthy relationship. Amen.

A faithful father tunes-in to, lives and teaches God’s design for sex from Genesis.

Excellent Dad Talk this week as usual, thanks. I really appreciate how you weave observations/analysis of culture and societal context into your wise counsel. Good (God) stuff.
