John Lewis, civil rights leader and Democratic Congressman from Georgia, passed Friday, July 17, 2020. Lewis was one of ten children of a sharecropper in Alabama when state power enforced white supremacy in the American South. He dreamed of being a preacher, but had a political awakening over civil rights while attending American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville. In his book, Impossible People, Os Guinness refers to Peter Damian as the impossible man. The eleventh century Benedictine reformer relentlessly spoke out against the most prominent evils – “In particular, he attacked the widespread practice of simony, the selling of church positions for money, and the equally widespread acceptance of homosexuality, pedophilia and pederasty, especially among the clergy.” Churches and the leaders had little regard for truth or for the integrity and purity of the Christian faith but did not appreciate Damian calling them out.

Wow, it was quiet! Five days backpacking in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado with no Internet, no cell service, no news and no other folks on the trail. It was just dads and sons enjoying God’s creation, fellowship and man-to-man discussion each evening. We covered over 30 miles and went from 8300’ elevation to 12,000’ at the Continental Divide.
